The Sylvia Beach Society

A new literary community group for book-lovers who value sharing space, time, and meals with fellow readers.
Photo of Sylvia Beach at a desk surrounded by photo of authors. A quote written over the photo reads, “Sylvia carried pollen like a bee. She cross-pollinated these writers. …nothing is more mysterious than such pollinations through dialogue, reading, or simple contact.” André Chamson
The group was started by fans of the Sylvia Beach Hotel, an artist-curated literary hotel which operated in Newport, Oregon from March 1987 to January 2025. The hotel was named for Sylvia Beach, whose bookstore was a community hub where the written word was the calling, valuing literary connections over business or profit. We aspire to continue her tradition.  Read more on our free Substack.

The mission of this group will be twofold:
  • Connect people (especially Oregonians and Oregon-lovers) around a love of literature, authors, reading and writing

  • Celebrate, memorialize and create magical places (like the Sylvia Beach Hotel) that bring us closer to literature and cultivate deep connections.
